Parliament Calls for A Salary Review Commission.

The speaker of Parliament Anita Among has given the government only two weeks to chart out a plan of establishing a Salary Review Commission to review the salaries of public servants and end piecemeal salary enhancements that are causing bickering in civil service. This was after some members of parliament expressed displeasure with discriminatory salary increments in UPDF where top UPDF officers got over 100% pay rise

Recently UPDF Spokesperson Felix Kulayigye, confirmed the pay rise for UPDF top officers at the rank of Brigadier General, Maj General, Lt General, and the four-star General/full General) by 100% while o Senior officers including; Major, Lieutenant Colonel, and Colonel to be effected to receive 50% increment in the Financial Year 2022/2023.

However, a section of lawmakers have come out today to protest the discriminative salary increment to top Generals of Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) on grounds that the policy is discriminative against the lower-ranking officers.

Although the government has plans to enhance salaries of lower ranks from the rank of Captain to Private in 2023/2024 alongside other civil servants. MPs believe the UPDF Pay rise was very unfair and uncalled for. They want the government to take a general pay rise for all armed forces including Police Prisons and UWA.

MPs asked Government to end the piecemeal salary increment among public servants and install a salary review commission to cater to all sectors.

The speaker of Parliament Anita Among also expressed discontent and put to task the minister of state for defense Jacob Oboth Oboth to explain the disparities saying.

After failing to convince parliament, the speaker Among gave the government only two weeks to produce plans on when the salary review commission will be put in place to address concerns of salary disparities in civil service.
