COSASE Faults URC over Illegal Sale of Land

By Admin

The parliamentary committee of Commissions, Statutory Authorities, and State enterprises has faulted the officials of Uganda Railway Corporation for violating the bidding process in the sale of agency Properties.

This was after it was discovered that a lot of URC Land was not advertised for sale but rather offered to individuals to buy in disregard of the bidding process.

Members of COSASE spent the better part of the day grilling officials of Uganda Railway Corporation over the controversial sale of company property in Kampala and Jinja. The Committee discovered that the bidding process was flouted and the land was offered to individuals to buy; whereas some properties were sold without advertising them.

COSASE also established that the Railway property was sold below the market value of the time and a lot of property was bought by a handful of individuals including the Mbarara City North Division MP Robert Mwesigwa Rukaali who bought part of the Nsambya Land.

Though over 25 properties were sold including prime land in Nsambya where Mestil Hotel is situated, URC officials could not explain the whereabouts of the money recovered from the sale of the property. This irked MPs and demanded and accountability.

The committee has given URC officials up to Tuesday to furnish it with all documents relevant to the sale of Properties including sale agreements, Valuation reports, Transfer Forms, Tenancy Agreements, and Inventory reports.
