Rich Countries Have Hoarded Covid-19 Vaccines –Minister Aceng
The Minister of health Jane Ruth Aceng has told parliament that the high global demand for vaccines outweighs the production because many of the rich countries have paid for many months to come therefore difficult for many African countries to get vaccines.
“Right Hon Speaker, we have made all efforts to secure vaccines, vaccines are not available on the market,”Hon Aceng explained.
The minister said that the government is making a multi prolonged approach including direct procurement from the manufacturer and all available sources, like the covax facility and the African Union.
She said that out of the 101 billion shillings provided by the Government for vaccines, only 3 billion has been paid to African Union that communicated they will be able to release 2 million doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine Uganda, Dr.Aceng said.
“We have not paid to any other supplier because the vaccines are not available, she noted. adding that vaccinating is a priority so that the economy is opened.
She added that the government is closely working with Uganda’s missions abroad to find sources where they can procure vaccines.
