MPs Want Children to Get 41% in Distribution of Wealth

MPs under the Uganda Parliamentary Women’s Association (UWOPA) want children to part more than 41% in the distribution of the wealth of the deceased spouses.

The succession Amendment bill 2018 which is before the legal and parliamentary Affairs committee proposes that the spouse of a deceased shall receive 50% of the properties, the dependents relatives go with 9% and lineal descendants   receive 41% of the whole of the property of the person who died without leaving a legal Will (Intestate).

However, some MPs while attending a high-level dialogue meeting on the pending Gender Bills Golf course hotel in Kampala organized by UWOPA and UN-women opposed to section 13 of the succession Amendment bill 2018, saying it’s unfair to children.

The church of Uganda has asked the women parliamentarians under (uwopa) to push for substantial distribution of the wealth of the deceased to go to children rather than spouses because these are more helpless.

“I think these are all very important bills”, but there is a need to popularize these bills and make them public-friendly, noting that one of the things that has not been done is to bring the public on board, Atiku said”.He said the bills should be taken to the people and in an open dialogue with communities so that their views can be captured.
